Boeing AH-64E Apache Attack Helicopter|UPSC

AH-64 Apache is the world’s best attack helicopter.
It can be equipped with air-to-air missiles and an advanced precision kill weapon system.
It can fight and survive during the day, night, and also in adverse weather throughout the world.

Which company manufactures the Apache helicopter?

The Apache helicopter is manufactured by the Boeing Company.
The Boeing Company is an American multinational company that designs and manufactures airplanes, rockets, satellites, telecommunications equipment, and missiles worldwide. It is among the largest global aerospace manufacturers.

India has procured AH-64 Apache from Boeing company. It is also used by the US Army.
India has contracted 22 Apache helicopters and 15 Chinook helicopters from Boeing through the Foreign Military Sales program of USA government.

Cobra vs Apache

The Apache has more useful load means weapons than a Cobra. The Cobra is faster, but that doesn’t mean it is better on the battlefield. Comparing Armor, weapons, and loiter time (loiter time is the length of time a military aircraft can remain over a target, taking fuel endurance into account.), Apache is better on the battlefield.

Why Has India shifted from AH-64E Apache to Indigenous LCH Helicopters?

Although the Apaches are best in the plains, they have limitations operating in the upper reaches of the Himalayas. That’s where the LCH (Light Combat Helicopter) is best. It was successfully tested in altitudes over 13,000 feet. It was the first attack helicopter to land at the forward base in Siachen.
However, there is a tradeoff between the capabilities of these two helicopters. While AH-64 can fly with 30-millimeter cannon and up to 16 missiles, LCH can only fly with 20-millimeter cannon and up to four missiles or rockets.
Still, LCH makes for a better choice in the mountainous regions as it is more important to have an armed helicopter that can fly above the mountains instead of a better destructive helicopter that can not withstand the challenging weather conditions.
